Practical Course Prof. Dr. Georg Pohnert

From organism to structure: Natural product analysis - Fully booked!

Organizer: Prof. Dr. Georg Pohnert

July 29th + 30th, Lessingstr. 8, Institut für Anorganische und Analytische Chemie

Max. number of participants: 8

Theme of the course:
In this course we will give a brief introduction into the purification and analysis of natural products.

The theoretical part will introduce you to various analytical instruments. The focus will be on the central question: “Which method do I use for my metabolite”. The theoretical unit will focus on MS, IR, UV and NMR techniques. We will discuss the methods that are available in facilities available at the university and the Beutenberg Campus.

In the practical part we will extract and purify natural products using column chromatography. We will develop a strategy of how to find out the structure of the purified metabolite and submit our samples for analysis. Once the spectra are obtained we will evaluate the data set and construct the structure.

The class is intended to introduce beginners with a basic chemical background into structure analytics. You will not be an expert solving the most complex structures but you will know which methods to use and whom to ask.
